MEXICO CITY WITH MATTE PROJECTS
THROUGH OUR LENS
Mexico City, one of the greatest cities on the planet seems to be expanding on its existing exuberance with a contemporary cultural renaissance; a burgeoning creative scene, a world class culinary destination, artists and makers abound. The bohemian ways are alive and well.
GALERÍA MASCOTA
Galería Mascota is a new project space providing a platform with a focus on the work of emerging foreign artists. The space constitutes an important window into foreign work that is locally relevant and will help inform the practice and development of Mexico City’s artistic landscape.
MATTE: How did you choose the location for the gallery?
GM: San Rafael has been a neighborhood that has been close to my heart for the last 12 years. Mascota started here almost 6 years ago in a small mechanic work shop’s office across the street from our current location and my dear friend and adoptive brother, Anuar Maauad, has occupied the building which houses the gallery for as long as I’ve known him. There’s a great feeling of community in this neighborhood which made it feel like a great fit.
“The gallery started in 2016 with the intention of showing emerging painting. Throughout the years we’ve done exhibitions on painting, mid century French and Brazilian design, ceramics and historic art movements.”

GM: We’re looking forward to working with a group of young artists brazildining including Marie Hazard, Hamish Pearch, Charlotte Vander Borght, Maxwell Mustardo, Renard. We’re also hoping to expand our educative initiative by creating a set of artists and curator talks at the gallery which we hope to share more on soon.
