Kōʻula at Ward Village

MATTE was hired by The Howard Hughes Corporation for second time in 2018 to create a film around their upcoming tower, KOULA.

Inspired by the way sugar cane’s foliage twists toward the sky, the building’s facade and architecture is all about the marriage between the natural world and human-made physical forms.

In kind, MATTE created a film that explored the interplay between nature vs sculpture, capturing some of Oahu’s most stunning natural forms, as well as accessing four local artisans who each, in their own distinct way, sculpt with nature.

Working with a fine art wood crafter, a surfboard shaper, a lei maker, and a professional surfer, the film finds the common denominator in each of their disciplines: nature and sculpture– the ethos of the KOULA tower.
